Our Legacy & Vision

As the first university in India to be established as a multidisciplinary and secular Western-style institution, the University of Calcutta has been a beacon of knowledge and progress.

The University of Calcutta was established on 24 January 1857 by the British East India Company during the tenure of Lord Canning as the Governor-General of India. It played a pivotal role in the Bengal Renaissance and has produced numerous luminaries including Nobel laureates, heads of states, and pioneering scientists.

Our vision is to continue being a globally recognized center of excellence that contributes to the advancement of society through the creation and dissemination of knowledge. We are committed to providing an inclusive environment that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and ethical leadership.

The university's Senate House, located on College Street, is an architectural marvel and a heritage building that symbolizes our rich history. Our main campuses are spread across Kolkata including the historic College Street campus, the Rashbehari Shiksha Prangan in Rajabazar, and the Technology campus in Salt Lake.
